Genie

Webtoon, a popular comic app, was having a contest in which you had to make 4-8 chapters for a comic. It had been a few years since I had created a visual story and I had the drawing bug, so I joined in on the fun.

TLDR;

2018 • Write script • Reference photography • Digital painting

SCRIPT WRITING

Before I even thought of starting the illustrations I wrote out the overall plot of the comic, defining out my main two characters: Kari and the Genie. Before long I had written out the script for ten chapters, more than enough content for the contest.

PHOTOGRAPHY REFERENCES

Since I was going to be in a time crunch (due to having a day job), I had the idea to take photos of my roommates to inspire the poses for the comic, making the illustration process much quicker. It definitely made me better at perspective, I highly recommend this for folks trying to get better at drawing people.

DIGITAL PAINTING

I used procreate on the iPad pro for initial drawings and Photoshop to finalize effects and color. I create massively long art boards (40,000 pixels tall!) to ensure the comic read in a smooth scroll on the phone.
